5000 Series Solartron IMP (Isolated Measurement Pod)

Making it ideal for wide-area monitoring of process and equipment under hostile environmental conditions. Control engineers can take advantage of existing IT networks to construct high-precision distributed data acquisition systems and economical DCS and SCADA front-ends.

The Solartron IMP concept was developed to eliminate one of the most significant SCADA implementation costs: signal cabling from the sensor to the measurement system. The concept is extremely simple: control parameters are measured at source by accurate, high-precision data acquisition modules. Ruggedised IP55 enclosures and rigorous electrical isolation allow the modules to be installed in harsh environments - including areas of high interference and vibration - very close to the point of measurement, eliminating costly cable runs.

Solartron's E-IMP extends this concept with built-in TCP/IP protocols, allowing direct connection via RJ-45 connectors to computers or off-the-shelf 10base-T hubs, further reducing the cost of installation - and network support can be provided by existing on-site IT resources.

The E-IMP provides 20 channels individually programmable for voltage, current, resistance, thermocouple and PRT measurement - plus digital and volt-free status monitoring, making it ideal for highly localised surveillance monitoring and alarm applications. Each E-IMP has its own on-board high precision 16-bit auto-ranging ADC (analog to digital converter) with configurable 3/6-pole signal multiplexing.

Internal microprocessing manages sensor energisation, signal conditioning and measurement linearisation on a per-channel basis, enabling the E-IMP to support a wide variety of sensors, such as thermocouples with selectable cold-junction compensation, RTDs, and standard 4-20mA transducers, while a user-specified five-term polynomial allows results to be converted into engineering units. Each E-IMP channel can be programmed to detect logic status at TTL or 3V/9V levels, allowing control engineers to monitor such activity as door openings/closings or valve position. Unlike standard digital I/O interfaces, the E-IMP also provides volt-free contact status, which enables relay switches to be monitored, making it ideal for independent alarm, switch-gear and railway track surveillance.

Solartron's Windows-based E-IMPView software speeds the set-up of simple Ethernet IMP-based data acquisition systems by eliminating the need to understand complex command structures, making it ideal for new users. E-IMPView interrogates the Ethernet network, collects information on the E-IMPs that are on-line, and displays the information in the form of a topological map. A single click on an E-IMP icon on this map allows the user immediate access to functions for setting up and interrogating the actual E-IMP.
