HOBO H8 Pro Series
y H08-032-IS*
Make
sure your logger is not logging and you have offloaded your data. Data
previously archived in the HOBO Pro will not be lost when removing the battery
or the BatteryAssistant; however, you should never remove them while logging as
you run a risk of corrupting the current datafile.
Before
opening the case make sure the outside is clean so as not to later contaminate
the O-ring seal. Open the case by removing the Phillips screw in the center of
the back of the logger, and then removing the stainless steel back plate. Make
sure the black O-ring does not fall from its groove. Gently remove the O-ring
from the groove around the edge, and carefully place it on a clean surface that
will not be affected by the silicone lubricant.

If
the HOBO Pro has a BatteryAssistant installed, gently pull the BatteryAssistant
straight out from the battery holder. Set the BatteryAssistant carefully aside
- it will be reinstalled. Remove the old battery. Note: Do not cut open,
incinerate, heat above +185°F (+85°C) or recharge the removed lithium battery.
Dispose per local regulations.
Insert
the new battery into the battery holder, being careful to observe the correct
polarity (as indicated on the battery holder or board, depending on version).
The logger’s red LED will blink a number of times after the battery has been
installed successfully. The LED can be seen through the open 3.5 mm jack. If
the HOBO Pro has a BatteryAssistant board, carefully insert the
BatteryAssistant into the battery holder, positioning the two tabs such that
they will slide in and be sandwiched between the ends of the battery and the
contacts of the battery holder. The desiccant pack should be placed loose in
the case, and not behind the battery, as the desiccant can occasionally
interfere with the proper seating of the BatteryAssistant, which in turn can cause
the back plate to improperly seat. When the BatteryAssistant has been fully
inserted into the HOBO Pro, its edge should be positioned just below the inside
rim of the Pro’s plastic case, parallel to the plane of the stainless steel
back plate. Before replacing the back cover, use the battery status indicator
in the Launch dialog box of the BoxCar ® software to verify proper operation
and a battery status of 98%. Use only 1/2 AA lithium batteries supplied by
Onset or an Onset Autho-rized Dealer.
Before
replacing the back plate, clean the O-ring groove thoroughly with a clean, dry
cotton swab. Clean the 3" round back plate as well, being especially
critical of the center hole where the screw seal is made and the inside face
where it makes contact with the large O-ring. Make sure that the back plate is
flat, and does not have any sharp edges or deep scratches on any of the O-ring
contact surfaces. If the back plate is damaged it will need to be replaced.
Apply a very thin, even coat of the O-ring lubricant to the O-ring only and
then place the O-ring in its groove in the case, again making sure the groove
and O-ring are free of any foreign matter. Now place the cleaned 3" round
back plate onto the back of the case over the O-ring, with the same face that
contacted the O-ring originally, contacting the O-ring once more. Install the
new seal screw and tighten the screw to 10 inch-pounds. Do not use LOCTITE on
the retaining screw. If you do not have a screwdriver that you can set for 10
inch-pounds of tightness, you should be especially careful not to over tighten
the screw. When tightening the screw with a regular Phillips screwdriver, you
will notice that the screw goes in smoothly and then very suddenly seems to
tighten up. At that point, tighten further very slightly so the screw head
rotates no more than another 1 mm or so.

The H08-032-IS data logger must be removed from the hazardous location before
changing the battery. In order to maintain the Intrinsically Safe rating, your
logger must use a Tadiran TL-5902 (3.6v 1.2Ah) battery, Onset part number HP-B.
HOBO H8 Family, H08-007-IS**, HOBO
Thermocouple Family, H12-002-IS**, HOBO H6 Family, HOBO Temp (gray box)
To
change the battery, open the case as shown in Diagram A. Lift the circuit board
and remove the battery by carefully pushing it out with a cotton swab with the
cotton removed or other small, blunt instrument. Be sure to install the battery
with the printed side away from the HOBO's circuit board as shown in Diagram B.
The logger's LED(s) will blink several times after the battery has been
installed.
**The
H08-007-IS and the H12-002-IS loggers must be removed from the hazardous
location to check battery level, change battery, and relaunch. In order to
maintain the Intrinsically Safe rating your logger must use a Sony or Renata
CR2032 (3.0v 225mAH) battery, Onset part number HRB-TEMP.

HOBO H8 Outdoor/Industrial 4-Channel
External and H08-008-IS***
We
recommend changing the HOBO's battery when its level is less than 30% (battery
level is displayed on the host computer during Launch, Readout or on the HOBO Shuttle
after data offload). Replacement batteries are available from Onset in boxes of
10 (Part # HRB-TEMP). Data stored in the HOBO will not be lost when removing
the battery. To change the battery, open the case as shown in Diagram A, remove
the battery by carefully pushing the plastic battery tab away from the battery
until the battery pops up. Carefully slide the battery out from under the metal
tab of the holder. Slide the new battery under the metal tab of the battery
holder with the printed side away from the HOBO’s circuit board as shown in
Diagram B. Press down on the battery near the plastic tab until the battery
snaps in place. The logger’s LED will blink a number of times after the battery
has been installed. The battery should fit tightly in the holder and the
battery's ability to rock back and forth should be minimal. A loose battery can
disconnect during deployment and result in data not being collected for the
full duration of your launch. If you suspect the battery is loose, remove the
battery once again and gently bend down the metal tab the battery slips under
or bend up the metal tab in the bottom of the holder. Reinstall and recheck as
described above. Note: Do not cut open, incinerate, heat above +185°F (+85°C)
or recharge lithium battery. Dispose per local regulations.

To
change the battery, remove the back cover by unscrewing the four Phillps head
screws. Remove the battery by pushing down on the battery holder's tab with you
finger, which will cause the battery to snap up. Reinstall the new battery with
the positive side away from the HOBO's circuit board. Press down on the battery
unit until it snaps in place. Reinstall back cover. The loggers LED will blink
a number of times after the battery has been installed.
To
change the battery, remove the battery door (back of unit) and insert the three
AAA batteries. Ensure that the batteries are installed in the proper direction,
then replace the battery cover. After battery installation, the LCD will
display all characters for five seconds. Thereafter, the LCD will display
temperature and % RH information for thirty seconds (external probe model needs
probe installed). After this, the logger will go into battery conservation mode
and display only the battery level. The logger will awake from battery
conservation mode and display data when launched with the host software.
To
change the battery, open the case by unsnapping the latch and lifting the lid.
Unplug the sensor cable and gently tap the open case onto the palm of your hand
until the circuit board dislodges. Remove the circuit board and remove the
battery by carefully pushing it out with a cotton swab with the cotton removed,
or another small, blunt instrument. Replace the battery as shown in Diagram B
(above). The logger's light will blink three times after the battery has been
installed.

Remove
the logger's cover. This may require peeling up the tabs that hold the cover to
the box. The cover may also be held to the box by a small spot of blue clay.
Lift the battery gently with the aid of a screwdriver, then pull it straight out,
being careful not to damage the prongs. Be careful not to damage the board in
the process.
Before
installing the fresh battery short the battery for about a second with a paper
clip or some other piece of metal. This removes the high internal resistance
that builds up when this kind of battery is not in use.
Install
the new battery, being careful to align the battery pins with the sockets on
the board. When the battery first makes contact the status LED on the board
should blink five times. If it does not, remove the battery, wait 10 seconds
and try again. Finally place the cover back on, lining it up so that the LED
shows through the intended spot on the label.
