Registradores
serie HOBO Pro
Preguntas generales:
1. ¿Cómo desconecto mi
registrador?
The logger stops recording when it is full (unless wrap around was
selected in the launch screen), when the logger is downloaded to the computer,
or if the battery is removed or drained.
If wrap around is selected logger will continue to record, overwriting
the oldest points when it becomes full. The logger will continue to record
until the launch mode is interrupted by a readout.
2. No puedo comunicar
con mi registrador ¿Por qué? No puedo iniciar mi registrador ¿Por qué?
Remove the battery and place the battery back in the battery terminal.
Watch the LED light, the moment the battery touches the battery terminal the
LED will blink a few times rapidly. If the LED does not blink, the battery is
dead. Replace the battery and relaunch or download your logger.
If your logger does not launch, and you have a PCMCIA network card as
part of your computer, try removing the card and launching the logger again. At
times, a PCMCIA card will interfere with the launch of the logger.
3. ¿Se pueden cambiar
las baterías?
Unless you are using loggers in the Optic StowAway or TidbiT line, the
battery is user replaceable. For directions on changing the battery please go
to: How to change your logger's batteries, and select the model that you are
using.
4. La batería de mi
registrador se agotó mientras estaba en el campo. ¿He perdido todos mis datos?
Onset loggers
store data in non-volatile EEPROM and the stored data will not be lost if their
batteries die or are removed. If the battery is user replaceable, you should be
able to retrieve the data after replacing their batteries.
If the battery
is not user replaceable, contact the place of purchase for a return
authorization number and request data back service. Charges will apply.
The data stored
in Optic Shuttles and Palm handhelds with HandCar is stored in RAM. If either
of these lose power, the stored data will be lost. The HOBO Shuttle has EEPROM
memory, but using a HOBO Shuttle with low batteries can corrupt the data files
and result in the data being irretrievable. If your HOBO Shuttle batteries
died, you will need to replace them and then try offloading the data to a PC.
It is important that you do not use any data-shuttle product with low
batteries.
5. ¿Cada cuanto tiempo debo cambiar la batería
de mi registrador?
Ver Tabla comparativa de los HOBO/StowAway. For
critical application, we recommend replacing the battery in half the specified
time.
6. ¿Donde se compran las baterías de mi
registrador?
En tiendas de electrónica o a través de EIC.
The
manufacturer, voltage and part number is listed on the battery.
The HOBO Pro
loggers originally shipped with a SAFT 1/2 AA Lithium battery. We discovered
that this battery builds up an internal resistance which gives a false low
battery reading. This resistance can build if the logger is set to take
readings at long sampling intervals. The battery will gradually increase its
passivity and may reach a point where the voltage is not sufficient enough to
record the next data point.
When purchasing
a replacement battery for the HOBO Pro loggers, please make sure that you
purchase a Tadiran 1/2 AA Lithium battery.
7. Mi registrador se ha mojado. ¿Qué debo hacer?
If the logger
was exposed to salt water, remove the board from the case, remove the battery
from the board and rinse the board under clean water. Dry the board completely
using a hair dryer. If the logger was exposed to fresh water there is no need
to rinse the board, you will just need to dry the logger completely. You may
try inserting a new battery and downloading the data. If you are unable to
access the data, contact the place of purchase for a return number. We may be
able to retrieve the data for you.
If you are using
a HOBO Pro Series logger, do not attempt to remove the board from the casing. If
the logger was exposed to salt water, remove the back plate and the battery. If
it appears that the inside of the logger got wet, rinse the board with fresh
water and dry as well as you can. If the logger was exposed to fresh water,
follow the above directions eliminating the fresh water rinse. Contact place of
purchase for a repair number. The HOBO Pro boards cannot be removed from the
case. Removing the board will mechanically damage components on the board.
Any sign of
corrosion or tarnishing on the board most likely means damage to the board.
Contact place of purchase for a repair number. Charges will incur and are
dependent on the amount of damage.
8. ¿Cada cuánto tiempo precisan calibración y/o
mantenimiento estos registradores?
Ver Comprobación
de Calibración
All HOBO and
StowAway loggers are manufactured using precision components. As long as the
loggers are not damaged, or exposed to conditions outside of their operating
environment, they should maintain their accuracy. The RH sensors however can
drift over a period of time. You should test your loggers in a controlled
environment on a yearly basis to make sure that they are running within the
specifications that are outlined in the User’s Manual. To request factory
testing, please contact place of purchase. Charges will incur.
9. ¿Puedo exponer a los registradores HOBO y StowAway a algún tipo de productos químicos?
This is
dependent on the logger you are using and the chemical and/or concentration of
the chemical that the logger is exposed to. Many chemicals will have an adverse
effect on the loggers and/or the sensors that the loggers utilize. Contact your
authorized sales representative with questions regarding specific chemical
contact with the loggers. Generally, these loggers are intended for exposure to
air, soil and water.
10. ¿Qué significa la marca CE en mi
registrador?
The CE mark
identifies the products as complying with relevant directives in the European
Union (EU).
11. He iniciado las
medidas en mi registrador. Al cabo de un rato he recuperado las medidas y sólo
obtengo una medida o mi registrador se desconecta inmediatamente después de
iniciar. ¿Por
qué?
Many of the
newer computers, primarily laptops have a power conservation feature which
shuts the serial port off a few seconds after the last character is sent. If a
HOBO or StowAway logger is still connected to the serial port when this
happens, the logger will shut off.
This problem has
been noted with (but is not necessarily limited to) Dell, HP and Gateway
laptops running Windows 2000, Windows 98 SE or Windows ME. A few desktop PC’s
have experienced this problem also.
Comprobar
para ver si existe este problema.
Using BoxCar Pro,
launch your logger from the computer that you are testing. If you are using a
laptop, it may behave differently when running off battery versus running off
the power plug; please test both. After launch, leave the logger attached to
the PC interface cable and watch the LED to see if it remains blinking. When a
logger is actively logging, the LED will blink faintly every 2 seconds. If the
power management is causing a problem, the LED will stop blinking within 1
minute.
If you are using
a HOBO Pro logger, the LED is located under the PC interface cable, and is not
visible when the cable is plugged in. To test a HOBO Pro, launch the logger to
take readings at 10 second intervals. Leave the logger attached to the interface
cable for 1 minute. You can either remove the interface cable at this point and
check the LED status, or download the datafile to see how many points were
collected. If power management is causing a problem, you will only see 1 data
point in the file.
Solución para la desconexión del puerto serie
debido al pulso para conservación de consumo:
To correct
this problem BoxCar Pro 4.0, 4.1, and 4.2.x customers should download the free
BoxCar Pro 4.3 upgrade patch. Customers who have downloaded BoxCar Pro
4.2.10 are advised to download the BoxCar Pro 4.3 patch, as the earlier version
contained a defect in its export function that caused exported data not to display
fractional parts. Similarly, BoxCar 3.6 and 3.7.1 customers should download the
free BoxCar 3.7.3 upgrade patch.
12. Interfaces:
USB
¿Puedo usar los registradores Onset si tengo un interfaz USB en mi PC en vez de interfaz
serie?
Onset offers a USB
Serial Adapter which provides a simple way to connect HOBO and StowAway data
loggers to available USB ports on your PC.
¿Funcionará el adaptador USB-a-serie que tengo
con los registradores Onset?
The following USB to
serial adapters for PCs have been tested to be compatible with Onset loggers
and some versions of BoxCar software and HandCar software for Palm handhelds.
Note: G3 and G4 Power Mac
users are unable to run BoxCar or BoxCar Pro due to the lack of a USB serial
cable adapter that is compatible with Virtual PC.

¿Funcionará el adaptador USB-a-serie que tengo
con el software de Onset distinto al BoxCar Pro 4.3?
The Onset USB Serial
Adapter will also work with BoxCar Pro version 4.0, 4.1, and 4.2 but Onset
recommends version 4.3 because that includes all the latest loggers and
software enhancements, and the upgrade from version 4.0, 4.1, and 4.2 to
version 4.3 is available as a free upgrade.
At this time,
Onset has not fully tested the USB Serial Adapter with BoxCar 3.7 or the
unwarranted BoxCar Pro for Mac, so neither of these are supported. There are
known problems with BoxCar 3.7, because it does not support COM ports 5 and
greater, which are often used by the USB Serial Adapter. Also note that G3 and
G4 Power Macs are unable to run BoxCar or BoxCar Pro because the
USB Serial Adapter is not compatible with Virtual PC.
¿Funcionará el adaptador USB que tengo con
otros dispositivos que requieren un puerto serie en el PC?
Onset has not tested,
nor does Onset support the USB Serial Adapter with non-Onset devices. However
the Onset USB Serial Adapter is the Keyspan High Speed USB Serial Adapter (part
# USA-19QW), and Keyspan supports many devices with this adapter. For
information on devices that Keyspan supports, see keyspan.com
1. ¿Puedo usar mi registrador de intensidad de
luz como medidior de luz de bajo costo?
No! These light
intensity loggers are designed to give you a general comparative idea of how
much light there is in an area; sunlight v. shade, lights on/off, etc. If you
are planning on recording specific lighting information or absolute values,
these loggers will not give you accurate data.
2. ¿Puedo usar mi registrador de intensidad de
Luz en exteriores?
The HOBO and the
StowAway light intensity loggers can be used outdoors, if they are placed in a
waterproof container with desiccant packs. If the container is curved or
thicker in areas, it will deflect the light as it passes through, leading to
skewed readings.
We do have
customers that have created their own waterproof cases for the HOBO HLI and
StowAway light loggers, using petri dishes. The logger is placed inside with
desiccant packs, and the dish is sealed together with silicon. You must be
absolutely positive that the container is completely sealed, or the desiccants
will work against you, drawing moisture in. This application is not guaranteed
by us.
Even protected,
the H08-004-02 light intensity sensor is not very useful
outdoors. This sensor records from 2 to 600 lumens per sq/ft. Full sunlight is
10,000 lumens per sq. ft.
3. ¿Cómo se relacionan
los lumens/sq. ft. a los
Lux y Foot-candles?
The two most
popular scales for light measurement are Lux, which is the European measure,
and Foot-candles which is the U.S. scale. Lux and Foot-candles are measure of
illumination - the amount of light falling on an object per unit area. The
difference is whether the light is measured in square meters or square feet:
1 lumens /sq.
meter = 1 lux
1 lumens /sq. foot = 1
foot-candles
How
can I convert between lux and Foot-candles?
To convert
between lux and foot-candles the following factors can be used:
Lux =0.0929 * FC
FC= 10.76 * Lux
Most people use
the approximation of 10 or 1/10 as the factor to convert between the two.
Familia H8: entradas de voltaje,
canal externo
Any of the
external channels in this family of loggers can accept a 0-2.5 volt DC input or
4-20 mA input.
1. Puedo usar los registradores H8, H6 y HOBO Temp en intemperie si están protegidos de la lluvia?
No. Condensation
will form from morning dew, temperature swings, fog, mist and high relative
humidity (RH). These families of loggers are designed for indoor applications
where the RH does not go above 95%. Use the HOBO Pro Temp Series for outdoor or
potentially wet applications.
2. ¿Puedo usar la Caja
SubCase
de Onset con mi registrador HOBO H8 que tiene
sensores externos?
No. The Subcase
is not designed to work with external leads. We do manufacture a new 4-channel
external logger for outdoor use, part number: H08-008-04.
3. ¿Cual es la polaridad de la clavija 2.5 Stereo para entrada de voltaje?
Negro = Masa (0V)
Blanco = Entrada
Rojo = señal pulsada de +2,5
Vdc para alimentación de sensores, activa sólo
durante las medidas. 2 mA max.
4. Inicié las medidas de mi registrador multicanal y obtengo una gráfica de voltios en vez de
temperatura en el canal externo. ¿Porqué?
When launching
multi-channel loggers you need to enable or disable the channels that you want
to use. Additionally, you must select the appropriate sensor within the
software. The external channel automatically defaults to voltage.
If you launched
your H8 logger without choosing the correct external measurement, following is
an unreleased application that has been made available on the internet in its
current, untested form at the request of customers who wish to convert the
external measurement in their datafile. There is no help file available with
this program, but it does come with an installation program.
This program
only works with the H8 family of loggers and will only convert the external
channel readings from volt to temp, or visa versa. To use this program, after
the install, simply drop the .dtf file that needs to be converted onto the
program. The rest is self explanatory.
Click here to reach download page for
the H8 File Converter.
5. Cuando entro en la pantalla launch con mi registrador H8 el campo de descripción está
lleno de DDDDDD’s y los canales en el campo de Medida son incorrectos ¿Por qué?
If a H8 logger
is disconnected immediately after selecting launch (or start), the information
that is stored on the loggers header becomes corrupted. To correct the problem,
simply relaunch the logger choosing the correct channels in the advance option
screen and relaunch the logger. Allow the launch parameters to be sent to the
logger before disconnecting.
6. Medidas de la Humedad Relativa del HOBO® H8
Mejoradas por medio del BoxCar 3.7.3 y BoxCar Pro 4.3
The accuracy of
HOBO H8* relative humidity measurements is being improved. Recent quality
assurance tests found certain H8 data loggers fell outside their ± 5% accuracy
specification above 60% RH. The outcome of efforts to improve the accuracy of
the H8’s RH measurements in environments with elevated humidity is a new
humidity formula that has been implemented in BoxCar Pro 4.3 and BoxCar 3.7.3.
These changes ensure all affected H8 loggers* satisfy the published RH accuracy
specification in elevated humidity, and improve logger accuracy across the
units’ RH operating range of 5° to 50°C.
The improved RH
accuracy function resides within the new BoxCar 3.7.3 software and is available
free to BoxCar customers via the web. An upgrade patch available on this
website. The new software improves all RH data accuracy for all affected
loggers, including older data files.
*Note: Affected
H8 units include H08-003-02, H08-004-02, H08-007-02, H08-007-02-IS.
Registrador de 4 Canales
externos
¿Puedo unir el voltaje del canal 1 a la tierra
del canal 2?
No. The 4 inputs
on the 4-channel external share a common ground. You cannot isolate any of the
channels.
1. Puede sumergirse en agua la serie HOBO Pro?
No. The Pro
series is weatherproof, not waterproof. The loggers can be left outdoors and
rained on (please see RH note below) without a problem. You should place the
loggers under a solar shield to record correct data. Direct sun will heat the
logger up, giving you readings that are higher than ambient.
The RH sensor
must be protected from direct rain and splashing. The sensor will read 100% RH,
however, direct rain and/or splashing will saturate the sensor, giving you
incorrect readings until the sensor dries out. When the sensor is saturated it
will max out at 104%. The readings will return to normal after the sensor dries
out.
When using the
HOBO Pro Temp/RH, protect the logger so that direct moisture cannot hit the
sensor, yet the air can still flow through to give correct readings. The RH
sensor should be facing downward, so condensation cannot build on the sensor,
causing saturation.
2. ¿Puedo pintar las cajas de los registradores
de la serie HOBO Pro para camuflarlos?
The case of the
HOBO Pro loggers is made out of a plastic that has a poor chemical resistance
to Toluene, Xylene and Keytones, among others. These are common chemicals that
are found in many paints.
Painting the
cases with paints containing these chemicals breaks down the plastic. This may
lead to the case leaking.
Latex paints can
be used on the HOBO Pro loggers case. The properties in the Latex paint are
similar to the properties of the case. If painting the HOBO PRO Temp/RH
(H08-032-08), it is important not to paint the sensor.
If you have any
questions regarding the chemical compatibility of the HOBO Pro or any of our
loggers, please contact the distributor that you purchased the loggers from.
Registradores de Estado HOBO
H6
1. ¿Cómo se instala el H06-003-02 motor on/off (campo AC), cuando el
motor tiene rejillas de radiador o aletas?
2. ¿Cómo se instala el registrador H06-002-02
Light on/off logger?
This logger must
be mounted with the sensor directly facing the light source, preferably inside
the light fixture but not too close to the bulb. Be careful to avoid exposing
the sensor to outside light sources that could cause false triggering. The
sensitivity can be adjusted on the logger to reduce false triggers.
3. ¿Cómo se instala el registrador H06-004-02 Vibration on/off
logger?
4. ¿Cómo se instala el registrador H06-001-02,
de Estado?
The
CABLE-2.5-STEREO is included with the logger and can be used to connect to a
passive contact closure, or dry relay switch. The logger also has an internal
read switch that (when used with the included security magnets), can log the
open and closing of doors, drawers, etc.
1. ¿Cuál es el uso principal del registrador
HOBO Event?
The H07-002-04
Event logger records the opening of a closed circuit, and used primarily for
tipping rain collectors and industrial counting application. The event logger will record
8000 events.
2. Mi Pluviómetro tiene 4 hilos que salen de
él. ¿Cómo lo conecto al registrador HOBO Event?
You will need to
check the specifications on the tipping rain bucket. This may require calling
the manufacturer for a wiring diagram. The Event logger’s black wire is ground
and the white wire is input. The red wire is not needed. The logger is looking
for a switch closure. Determine which wires are appropriate. With a switched
closure, polarity is not relevant.
3. El archivo de datos muestra dos lecturas más
que mi ensayo. ¿Por
qué?
The first and
last event on your data file is a stamp of the start and end time. For an
accurate account of events, these two must be deducted from your totals.
4. Mi registrador de Eventos ha registrado más
eventos que los que han ocurrido. ¿Por qué?
The voltage may
bounce a little after the logger records an opening of a closed circuit. This
may create a false event. To ensure that you do not record false data, we
highly suggest that you use the Lockout after event function located in the
Launch screen under Advanced Options. We recommend setting the lockout to one
second to eliminate switch bounce. The lockout informs the logger to ignore
events for a programmable period of time after an event is recorded. The
lockout can be set anywhere from one second to nine hours.
1.
Cual es la duración de la vida de las baterías
TL-5186
si las tengo en el cajón?
As long as the
batteries are stored in a cool, dry environment, the batteries have up to a ten
year shelf life from manufacturing data that is stamped on the bottom of the
battery. Ex: A0393 means 3/93 March of 1993. The letter is the lot code.
2. I just placed a new battery in my logger and it
still will not connect. Why?
The TL-5186
lithium batteries builds up an internal passive resistance over a period of
non-use. This will reduce the power available to the logger. Remove the battery
from the logger and short the two battery prongs (by placing a small metal
object over them), for about a half second. Place the battery back in the
logger. If the logger is receiving power from the battery, the LED light will
blink a few times rapidly upon contact. Attempt to launch the logger again.
If the LED light
blinks and you are still unable to connect, contact place of purchase for
further assistance.
1. My Optic/TidbiT logger fails to download to my Optic Shuttle. What
can I do?
Rest assured,
the Optic Shuttle will not relaunch a logger that it cannot download. Make sure
that the logger and the shuttle are clean from any type of buildup, algae,
dust. etc. Follow cleaning directions below. Verify that the shuttle, logger
and coupler are aligned properly, and the magnet is still sitting in the small
extension on the coupler.
If you are still
unable to download to the shuttle, try to download the logger to the base
station. Record any error message that you receive from BoxCar Pro or LogBook
software. Contact place of purchase for repair number, specify that you need
the data retrieved.
2.
How do I clean my Optic/TidbiT logger?
Do not use any
type of chemical on the Optic or TidbiT loggers! You can wash the logger with a
mild soap and warm water solution. If the logger has a mineral or algae
build-up that will not come clean, do not scrape it off! You can use either a
plastic polish, such as Novice™, or you can clean the case with toothpaste and
a soft cloth.
3.
My Optic logger leaked, is there anyway to retrieve the data on board?
The data is
stored on a non-volatile EEPROM. As long as the EEPROM is not damaged, we
should be able to retrieve the data for you. Contact place of purchase for a
return number and specify that you need the data retrieved.
Please include
the following information on your deployment with the return of your logger:
Purchase date of
logger.
Length of deployment.
Environment logger was deployed in.
Temperature extremes logger was exposed to.
Protective casing that was used and/or device that held the Optic in place.
Depth logger was deployed at.
Was the logger exposed to chemicals in deployment or cleaning?
4.
I cannot connect to my Optic/TidbiT logger on my laptop. Why?
Some older style
laptops do not have enough power running through their communication serial
port to allow communication with the Optic line of loggers. We manufacture a
Base Station with an additional 9v battery to fix this. Make sure that you are
able to connect to other loggers on the laptop prior to purchasing the base
station with additional battery. It could be a problem with your COM port
settings in which case the Base station with 9v battery will not help.
5.
Can the battery be replaced on my Optic/TidbiT logger?
The Optic and
TidbiT XT loggers have a factory replaceable battery. The Tidbit Temp (Part #’s
TBI32-05+37, TBI32-20+70, and WTB models), battery cannot be replaced. Contact
place of purchase for a return number and pricing.
6.
How can I protect my Optic/TidbiT logger while deployed?
Many of our
customers place the Optic/TidbiT logger inside a piece of PVC piping (the
inside of the pipe should be padded with foam), if the logger is going into a
fast moving stream, or environment with a strong current. The ends of the pipe
are screened off to allow water to flow through freely. This protects the
logger from breaking if something crashes into it. Additionally, it gives you
the ability to camouflage the pvc pipe to fit into the environment that the
logger is going into.
If the logger
will be going into an environment where the communication end might become
fouled by marine growth or abraded by current borne abrasives the communication
end should be protected. Using something such as the end of a balloon to cover
the end of the logger will not harm the plastic case. We have had customers
that wrapped tape around the logger to protect it. This is effective, however
there could be chemical incompatibilities between the adhesive and the plastic
case. Additionally this may leave a gummy residue that can interfere with the
communication between the logger and shuttle/base station.
7.
I seem to lose some of my loggers due to spring runoff or storms. Is there
anyway to locate them using a metal detector?
Yes metal
detectors will pick up the logger. Another precaution that you may take, prior
to deploying your loggers, place a tag on the logger (aluminum dog tag),
stating your name, business address and phone number. This way if the logger is
found, there is an address to send to it to.
8.
I have my Optic loggers deployed in a lake where we plan on electroshock
fishing to tag the fish. Will this affect my loggers?
We have run into
incidents in the past where customers have left the loggers in this situation
and have not had a problem. On the other hand, we have also had customers whose
loggers stopped recording. It is a gamble and strictly up to you. We do suggest
that you pull the loggers up to err on the safe side. Or at least check them
after to make sure that they are still recording.
9.
I downloaded my Optic/TidbiT loggers to the Optic Shuttle. The transfer went
fine in the field, however, the Shuttle will not transfer the data to the my
computer. Why?
Check to make sure that the coupler is
positioned correctly.
Make sure that you are able to communicate with other loggers. Press the
transfer button on the shuttle when it is not hooked up to the computer or a
logger, if the LED lights on the shuttle blink (transfer and then fail), the
shuttles battery is working fine and there is a communication problem between
the shuttle and the computer.
If the LED light does not blink, then the battery on the shuttle died.
Unfortunately, the data that is stored on the shuttle at this point is lost.
The Optic shuttle stores the data on RAM, which ceases to store information if
the power is removed.
Contact place of purchase and request a return number, state that you
need your data recovered form your Optic Shuttle. We will be able to retrieve
the files that are stored, as long as the shuttle has not lost power. If there
is a damaged file stored, the data from that particular logger may or may not
be useful.
10. I receive a GPF fault when attempting to download the shuttle to the
computer. Why?
BoxCar Pro 3.5 had a problem with the allocation of memory that only
effects the downloading of the Optic Shuttle in Windows 95 and NT. BoxCar Pro
3.5 will display a General Protection Fault (GPF) after displaying the time
synchronization and prior to the Save As dialog box appearing.
The loggers can be downloaded directly to the computer without a
problem. Files stored on the shuttle when this GPF occurs will not be lost as
long as additional files are not downloaded to the shuttle.
BoxCar 3.51 resolves this problem. You can
