CALIBRACION

The photon flux of UV radiation (250 to 400 nm) can be expressed as a percentage of the Photosynthetic Photon Flux (PPF; 400 to 700 nm). The unit for both UV and PPF is µmol m-2 s-1. The total photon flux of UV radiation from sunlight is close to 8.5 % of the PPF in sunlight. The photosynthetic photon flux at noon in full sunlight is about 2000 µmol m-2 s-1 and the photon flux of UV radiation is about 170 µmol m-2 s-1. UV meters and sensors are calibrated in sunlight against a LI-COR spectroradiometer.

UTILIZACION DEL MEDIDOR UV

1.  Turn the dial to the "ON" position.
2.  Hold the meter so that the sensor surface on the top is horizontal.
3.  Hold the meter at eye level to avoid shading the sensor with your head.
4.  The number in the display is the UV radiation in units of µmol m-2 s-1.
5.  Turn the meter off after use to conserve battery power.

TOMA DE MEDIDAS

Our meters offer good accuracy at a low cost, but the user should be aware of potential sources of error. The biggest error is often caused by small changes in the position of the meter. The sensor on the top of the meter must be exactly horizontal for the most accurate measurement.  The correct position for making a measurement is shown at right.

SENSIBILIDAD DEL SENSOR UV

PORQUÉ ESTE SENSOR NO PUEDE MEDIR RADIACION UV-B SELECTIVA

Our spectroradiometer measurements confirm those of other people and indicate that less than 0.4 % of the photon flux in sunlight falls below 320 nm; 2.3 % falls between 320 and 350 nm, and 6% falls between 350 and 400 nm. Although the UV radiation between 250 and 320 nm is critically important in photochemical and photobiological reactions, only about 5% of the UV photons nm are in this range. Because only a small fraction of the photons are in the UV-B range, this meter thus cannot be used to selectively measure UV-B radiation (280-320 nm). The meter is sensitive to UV-B radiation, but it is included with the UV-A radiation to provide a total measurement of UV radiation.

FACTORES DE CONVERSION

Los modelos de medidor de mano muestran la Radiación UV en µmol m-2 s-1.

Los Sensores se conectan a un multímetro o registrador de datos. The sensor uses a photodiode to yield a millivolt output. This output is multiplied by a conversion factor to yield UV radiation in units of µmol m-2 s-1. The calibration factor is approximately 6.5 (0.15 mV per µmol m-2 s-1), but is sensor specific.

Increasing temperature increases the output of most radiation sensors. This meter was calibrated at 20°C. Our measurements indicate that the temperature error is less than 3% between 10 and 30°C. The temperature error is insignificant for most applications.

ESTABILIDAD A LARGO PLAZO

The output of all radiation sensors tends to decrease over time as the detector ages. We recommend returning the meter or sensor for recalibration every 3 years.

CALIBRACION   Both models UVM and UVM-SS include a potentiometer that can be used to change the calibration. Please contact EIC if you would like the meter recalibrated. Do not attempt recalibration without a radiation standard.  Model UVS (sensor only version) is calibrated to provide approximately 0.1 mV per µmol m-2 s-1Calibration certificate provided.
